Study, Study, Study for the exam. It's all about the basics and applying them to each situation. One of my accounting professors once told me, "In order to be a good CPA, you must be an expert bookkeeper first.
My father was a CPA for 58 years, so it's always been part of my family's experience growing up. But, I realized early on that accounting is "the language of business" and every business decision is based, in part, on the accountant's work.
I've been with TPC for 29 years. I always knew that a smaller, family atmosphere was what I was looking for as a first-year accountant. I knew I would be given opportunities to learn and grow within my profession while being exposed to different types of organizations.
The family atmosphere. We believe that family truly important. We also understand that work life and family life are not the same. Why work hard if you never have time to enjoy it? Work/Life balance is important here.
Throughout my 29+ years, there have been a lot of fun times. From practical jokes during vacation to birthday parties, we always find a way to have fun.
How challenging the work has become. With the constant change in reporting requirements and tax laws, there's always an opportunity to learn something new. I am definitely never bored.
I have a wonderful wife of 14 years and three beautiful daughters....and of course our Chief Morale Officer, Pearl (our rescue), our bearded dragon, Terry and a fish called Rocky.
I was born and reared in Glasgow, KY, went to school at the University of Kentucky, got married, transferred to Kennesaw University in Atlanta where I lived for 5 years. After that I moved back to Glasgow.
As with most young men in Barren County 40 years ago, my first job was cutting tobacco. I learned quickly, that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I tried my hand at many different jobs during my education years. Everything from hauling cattle for the stock yards to marketing director to a pinhooker at a sears store is on my resume'. I have even sold vacuum cleaners door to door.
